How to Apply for a Library Card
The Allegany County Library System serves a diverse population from a
large geographic area, including residents of Maryland, West Virginia, and
Pennsylvania.
To become a patron of the Allegany County Library System, residents
of Maryland may apply for a free library card.
A $10.00 annual fee will be charged for all non-Maryland residents.
This amounts to 83 cents per month for the great materials and services
you receive at the Allegany County Library System!
Applications for library cards are available at all ACLS
locations.
We ask that you please bring 2 forms of identification with your current name and
address with you to the library at the time of registration. A driver's
license, check book, bill, report card, or voter registration card are all
possible forms of identification.
Children must be able to print their full names in order to apply for a
library card. Applications for children under the age of 16 must be signed
by a parent.
Can I Use My Library Card at Other Libraries?
The Allegany County Library Card can be used at all branches of the
Allegany County Library System. In addition, your Allegany County
Library card can also be used at any public library in the state of
Maryland. Maryland is the first state to formally implement a
borrowing program that unifies libraries in a statewide system.
There are some standards that have been agreed upon for initial
registration of patrons with the statewide library card usage, but once
a patron is registered they will follow the local policies and
procedures for each library that they use.
Can I Check Out Materials Without My Library Card?
The Allegany County Library System policy states that materials
will only be checked out with a library card.
If you happen to forget to bring your library card with you, the librarian
will be happy to hold items at the circulation desk for you until you do bring
in your library card. The maximum amount of time that books can be held is
7 days.
What Happens If I Lose My Card?
Patrons who lose their library card can have two replacement cards issued to them
before a fee of $1.00 will be charged for the third replacement
card.
On your next visit to the library, simply notify the librarian on duty that
you have lost your library card. A new card will be issued promptly so
that you can check out materials immediately.
Name, Address or Phone Number Changes?
Please notify the library immediately of any changes to your patron record,
including name, address, email address, and phone number changes.
