Bookmobile

During the Week before Christmas, the Allegany County Library System donated our bookmobile to Mississippi's Pearlington Library, one of the areas of the Gulf Coast devastated by Hurricane Katrina.  Other Maryland Library systems donated about 4,000 new books, delivered with the bookmobile.  With the bookmobile, Pearlington Library now has a fully functioning library branch on wheels to serve the community. 

 

The Allegany County Library System was about 2 years away from purchasing a new bookmobile, but thanks to the continued support of the Skitarelic Family, we will have a new bookmobile this year.

    In operation since 1960, the Allegany County Bookmobile holds the distinction of being the only county library on wheels.  The Bookmobile carries a wide variety of materials for adults and children including, books, magazines, large print, and bestsellers.  There is an Interlibrary Loan service to request titles that are unavailable.

 

The Bookmobile schedules stops to schools, nursing homes, day cares, and neighborhoods throughout the county on a three week rotation.  All scheduled stops are open to the public.

 

The Bookmobile was donated in memory of Dr. Benedict Skitarelic through the generosity of his family.
