The Allegany County Library System
is one of 24 public library systems in Maryland. It consists of six
branches, including the Main Branch on Washington Street in Cumberland, as well
as branches in Frostburg, George's Creek, LaVale, South Cumberland, and
Westernport. A Bookmobile is headquartered at the LaVale Branch.
The system serves citizens of all ages in the Allegany County Region
with collections of books, newspapers, magazines, films, video and audio
cassettes, and electronic material. The Washington Street Library has the
Cumberland Times-News on microfilm back to
August, 1941.
Each of the libraries in the
system also has free computer access to the Internet and to the Maryland
Sailor
project, a web site focused on Maryland information, with links to Maryland
Libraries, specialized databases, and a gateway to the World Wide Web. The
Maryland Marina (Interlibrary Loan) project enables requests for materials from
libraries outside of the Allegany County Library System to be processed
daily.
The libraries offer fax service
for the public, and a photocopier is present at all locations.
Over 500 books on local and state
history and genealogy are located in the Washington Street Library's Avirett Maryland Room.
Patrons may access the Maryland Room during the library's hours of operation.
All of the libraries have Federal Internal Revenue Tax Forms as well as
Maryland Tax Forms.
A seven-member Board of Library
Trustees sets system policy which is carried out by the director, who is
responsible for the operation of the libraries. Library Board members
serve 5-year terms and are eligible to be reappointed for a second term.
The Allegany County Commissioners make appointments from a list of candidates
recommended by the Trustees.
