June 5, 2001 County Libraries Start Book GroupPRESS RELEASE - Allegany County Library System Contact: Linda Burkey South Cumberland Library 100 Seymour Street Cumberland, MD 21502
The newly formed Book Discussion Group of the Allegany County Library System will meet June 28 from 7-9 p.m. at the South Cumberland Branch, 100 Seymour Street, to discuss the book The Reader by Bernard Schlink. The Reader is set in postwar Germany and tells the tale of two people whose relationship attempts to breach the gap between Germany's pre- and postwar generation. An international bestseller, The Reader was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, and an Oprah's Book Club selection. "This group was formed in response to the many inquiries we have had from the community for such a group" said Linda Burkey, Library Coordinator for the group. "Our aim is to get people together to talk about their favorite books and introduce each other to authors that they may not find on their own. We try to select books that will be interesting to both men and women and will produce an evening of lively discussion and intellectual stimulation." Copies of the book are available to borrow at each of our branches. The July selection is Stones from the River by Ursula Hegi and will be held on July 26, 2001. The book group will meet the 4th Thursday of each month at the South Cumberland Library from 7-9pm. Light refreshments will be provided. For further details, call 301-724-1607.
