Storyteller to Visit County Libraries

PRESS RELEASE - Allegany County Library System

Allegany County Libraries will be highlighting their summer Buggy About Reading Club with Patricia MackPreston, the "Spider Lady", on Wednesday July 11 and July 17.  MackPreston will spin West African tales of Anansi, the Spider.  Each story contains a lesson that children can apply to their daily lives.  MackPreston uses drums, rain sticks, and other African instruments and songs to teach the children about the African culture.

The presentations are being cosponsored by the Allegany County Arts Council.

Along with the Reading Club members, children of all ages and their parents are welcome to attend.  Anyone with any physical handicap who would need special accomodations should call ahead of time so that arrangements may be made.

MackPreston will perform Wednesday at the Frostburg Public Library at 11a.m., the George's Creek Library at 2pm and the Westernport Library at 4pm.  Performances will take place on July 17 at the South Cumberland Library at 10am, the main branch on Washington Street, Cumberland, at 2pm and the LaVale Public Library at 4pm.

For additional information, contact a local branch of the library.  Reading Club members are to note the time changes for their library.

One of Allegany County Library's Summer Reading programs will reward a lucky child and their family with 4 tickets to the Baltimore Oriole - Boston Red Sox game on Saturday September 15, 2001.  All branches of the Allegany County Library System are participating in the Orioles' Summer Reading Program.  To enter, children aged 6 to 13 will read four newspapaer articles from the sports section and answer one question about each article.  Entry forms can be picked up and dropped off at any library branch.  The winning entry will be drawn the week of August 20, 2001.

The grand prize winner will also be honored at a pre-game ceremony on the field of Camden Yards on gameday.  "Every child who enters will receive a poster or bookmark just for trying the contest," explains Connie Wilson, Coordinator of Children's Services.  "And we will also be giving away 12 Orioles T-shirts at the drawing."

Connie Wilson adds, "reading the newspaper is a great way to keep up your reading skills over the summer, and what an opportunity to see Cal Ripken play in his last season!"

John Mash, local author and forester, will speak on the history of the eastern part of Allegany County, Maryland on August 7, 2001 from 7-8 pm at the South Cumberland Branch of the Allegany County Library System.

Mash's work, starting out as a forester over 25 years ago, led him to groundbreaking discoveries into the cultural and archeological history of a region known as the Land of the Living, a place enjoyed by many out-of-towners but undiscovered by local residents.

As Mash says, "Hardly anyone from Allegany County knows what's out there" in what he calls Allegany County's backyard.  "Most visitors are from distant places."

The region of which he speaks gave Mash the title for his book The Land of the Living: The Story of Maryland's Green Ridge Forest.

The evening continues the library system's new History Lecture Series held once a month on Tuesday night.  Next in the series is Francis Zumbrun's discussion of the Cresap Family and the Green Ridge State Forest on September 11, 2001 from 7-8 pm at the Frostburg Branch Library.
