Dr. David Dean, Professor in the History Department at Frostburg State University, will present “Bicycling Across History:  Following the Trek of Our Mid-Nineteenth Century Ancestors West” on Wednesday September 5, 2001 at 7:00 pm in the meeting room at the LaVale Branch Library.  Dr. Dean will compare and contrast his experience bicycling along the Oregon Trail with our ancestors who traveled this route in the 1840’s and 1950’s.

Material for the talk is drawn from diaries, letters, and journals of those who journeyed in the 19th century and from Dr. Dean’s own journal and memories.  Pictures and photographs of the route and its participants both then and now will illustrate the presentation.

Dr. Dean is a co-author of Allegany County—A History, and has presented “Bicycling Across History” in different formats in the U.S.A., Ireland and South Africa.  He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Texas in Austin. Dr. Dean's presentation is being sponsored by The Maryland Humanities Council and is free and open to the public.  Sign Language interpretation will be available upon request by calling the LaVale library before  August 21, 2001 at  301-729-0855.

The Book Discussion Group of the Allegany County Library System will meet August 23, 2001 from 7-9pm at the South Cumberland Branch, 100 Seymour Street, to discuss the book House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III.

Set in California, the House of Sand and Fog recounts the tragedy of two adversaries, one an Iranian colonel who immigrates to the U.S. after the fall of the Shah, the other a young woman who one day finds herself evicted from her house due to a tax office error.

"The group meets regularly on the 4th Thursday of each month at the South Cumberland Library from 7-9pm," says Linda Burkey, Library Coordinator for the group.  "Anyone who has read the book selection is invited to attend any or all of the discussions; no prior registration is necessary."

The selection for September 27th is The Fall of a Sparrow by Robert Hellenga.  Copies of the books are available to borrow at each of our branches.  Light refreshments are provided.  For further details, call 301-724-1607.

Francis Zumbrun, who is currently writing a book on Thomas Cresap (the first settler in Allegany County) will discuss this history of the Cresaps on Tuesday evening September 11, 2001 from 7-8 pm at the Frostburg Branch of the Allegany County Library System.

"Zumbrun, during a recent lecture for the library, helped the audience understand just how historically important the Oldtown/Green Ridge Forest area was back in the days when Cresap first settled there and when 'going to the western frontier' meant going to what is now the easternmost part of Allegany County," commented Linda Burkey, Lecture Coordinator.  "Zumbrun brings the history alive."

The evening continues the library system's History Lecture series held once a month on Tuesday night.  The talks last approximately one hour followed by the speaker answering questions from the audience.  Next in the series is Stanley Dickinson's "The Iron's of George's Creek" on October 2, 2001 from 7-8 pm at the George's Creek Branch Library.
