Teen Read Week At the Library Encourages Teens to Make Reading a Hobbit
PRESS RELEASE - Allegany County Library System
Contact: Linda Burkey South Cumberland Library 100 Seymour Street Cumberland, MD 21502
What is a hobbit? Can a hobbit be a habit? What do hobbits have to do with teens and reading? The answers to these questions will be revealed during Teen Read Week, which will be celebrated at all branches of the Allegany County Library System October 14-20.
Do
hobbits read? Of course they do. Do teens read? Of
course they do. Do either hobbits
or teens have a reading habit? If
not, the library’s events celebrating Teen Read Week are designed to help
teens develop a habit of reading for the fun of it.
All
branches, including the bookmobile, will have displays featuring their new books
for young adults. Along with the
displays, the teens will find book review cards for sharing their opinions on
the books they’ve read. These
cards will then be posted nearby, and a selection of the reviews will be
included on the library’s web page http://lib.allconet.org/.
The
Main Branch will host an Open Mike on Thursday, October 18 from 7:30-8:30 PM.
Teens aged 13-17 are invited to come have a good time and talk about
their favorite book, read a poem, sing a song, play a musical instrument, or
display their artwork. Refreshments
will be served. The
Westernport Branch will have a Fantasy Night on Wednesday Oct 17 from 7-8 PM.
Teens can come dressed as their favorite fantasy character.
Teens will also be given the opportunity to fill out “Are You A
Remarkable Reader Survey” forms.
Young
Adults checking out library books at the South Cumberland Branch and on the
Bookmobile during Teen Read Week will be entered in a raffle to win a bookstore
gift certificate.
The
George’s Creek Branch will be hosting a Halloween planning meeting along with
students from Allegany, Washington and Garrett Counties on Oct 24 from 6:30 to
8:30 PM. Reading for the fun of it is the very best way to acquire a reading habit, a valuable acquisition for teens.
