The Allegany County Library System is happy to announce the start-up of their Business Lecture Series for 2002.  Kate Malkie, from the Women’s Business Institute, will speak on “New Business Start-Up-What Does It Take? -A Feasibility Plan” at the Frostburg Branch Library on Tuesday, January 8 from 6-8 pm.

Mulkie explained that the feasibility plan is a combination of business plan and feasibility study and is what most small businesses would use to get started.

Though this lecture is geared to those who have considered opening a small business, it is open to anyone interested.  It is free, and no prior registration is necessary.

The evening will be the first of two lectures given by Malkie at the Frostburg Branch Library.  On January 24, from 6-8 pm, she will do a lecture entitled “Already in Business?  What More Do You Need to Know?”

Dr. Nick Casto will be at the Allegany County Library at 31 Washington Street on Tuesday, January 8 at 6:30 pm to help people stop smoking.

Casto, who works at the WMHS Wellness Center, will explain all the help that is in place and ready to start at the beginning of 2002 for a campaign against smoking. The help, including physician-supervised classes, screening exams, and prescriptions for nicotine replacement medications, is designed to make it easier for smokers to stop for good.

“We’re happy to work with the Wellness Center to get word to our patrons that might encourage them to stop smoking,” explains Linda Burkey, Speaker Coordinator.  “This is just one of the programs we have planned in January to help our patrons keep their New Year’s resolutions.  Other programs planned will encourage you to make a living will, eat healthier for your heart, learn to use the Internet or get a free e-mail, and help you find a new career or new job if that’s what you want.”

Betty VanNewkirk will speak on the History of the National Road at the LaVale Library on Wednesday, January 9, 7pm.  The Lecture is part of the Allegany County Library System’s History Lecture Series.

Though she was born in Buffalo, New York, VanNewkirk says, “I’ve lived in Frostburg longer than most natives.”  She followed her professor husband to Frostburg in 1949, and has been caught up in local history ever since.  “The National Road has been one of my particular interests since Frostburg’s Main Street was part of the National Road,” she explains.

VanNewkirk is curator of the Frostburg Museum and a member of the town’s Historic District Commission.  She contributed a weekly column to the Cumberland Times News and is the author of two collections of historical vignettes about Frostburg: Windows to the Past and the just released Kaleidoscope.

The History Lecture Series normally meets the 1st. Tuesday of each month, but because of the New Year’s holiday is being held January 9th.  Next in the series will be Harold Scott speaking on the Civil War at the Main Library on February 5 at 7pm.
