Yob from the Job and Career Information Center at Enoch Pratt Free Library in
Baltimore will present a Job and Career Seminar at the South Cumberland Branch
Library on Wednesday, January 16, starting at 10:00 am, and lasting till 1:00
pm. Yob
will inform the audience on what job finding and career planning resources are
available through their local library. She
will also demonstrate how to access and use the resources.
Much of the information is accessible in the privacy of your own home, on
the library’s web site at http://lib.allconet.org.
She’ll lead the audience through our web site to show how to locate the
databases. Help
available can include such information as finding the right test study guide,
finding a job description, taking a test to see what type of work would suit
your personality, finding what qualifications and education you need for a
career, and how to acquire training.

Frostburg Book Club Discussion on January 15

The Frostburg Book Club will meet at the Frostburg Branch Library Tuesday, January 15 at 7 pm to discuss Cane River by Lalita Tademy. A family saga spanning four generations, Cane River is set in Louisiana along a river of the same name. The story is brought to life by Tademy’s research into her own family background. She uses what she has uncovered to build a fictional family dealing with American slavery and interracial marriage. This newly formed discussion group meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at the Frostburg Branch Library at 7 pm. The group selects their reading by a majority vote of the members. Future book selections include Tara Road by Maeve Binchy-February 19, The Winner by David Baldacci-March 19, Rapture of Canaan by Sheri Reynolds-April 16, Fortune Is a Woman by Elizabeth Adler-May 21, and Back Roads by Tawni O’Dell-June 18. Copies of the books are available at the library.
January 9, 2002 Book Discussion Group Meets January 24PRESS RELEASE - Allegany County Library System Contact: Linda Burkey South Cumberland Library 100 Seymour Street Cumberland, MD 21502 The Book Discussion Group of the South Cumberland Library will meet Thursday, January 24 at 7 PM to discuss The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. Anyone who has read the book selection is invited to attend; no prior registration is necessary. Copies of the book are available at the library. Living in New Delhi, India, Arundhati Roy , trained as an architect, worked as a screenwriter, and has produced a noteworthy first novel, The God of Small Things. Roy’s way with words needs to be experienced firsthand. Roy leaves you feeling like family to her cast of quirky characters that includes Esthappen and Rahel, a set of almost Siamese twins, and Chacko, a Rhodes scholar who runs the family Paradise Pickles and Preserves business. The Story is set in a place called Ayemenem, times are tense, violence is breaking out with Pakistan, flag-waving Marxist Party members surround cars in the streets, and one of her characters compares their courage with that of a suicide bomber’s. It’s the 1960’s, and we’re in India. The
Book Discussion Group meets at the South Cumberland Library the 4th.
Thursday of each month at 7 pm. Canawlers,
a novel of the C & O Canal during the Civil War,
by local author James Rada, Jr. is
the selection for February 28. As
an added bonus, Rada will be present to tell about writing the book and to

Cumberland, MD 21502 The
South Cumberland Branch Library will be showing the public how they can obtain a
free e-mail account on Wednesday, January 23, during lunchtime from 12:15 till
12:45. The class is designed for
people to bring a lunch with them to eat at the library, and a cup of ice and
drink or hot coffee/tea will be provided. The lunchtime classes are new for the library system this year. Hopefully they will allow patrons who are busy at other times of the day to take advantage of some of our services.

Malkie, from the Women’s Business Institute, will be at the Frostburg Branch
Library Thursday, January 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. to present “Already in Business?
What More Do You Need To Know?” In this lecture, business owners will be given a thumbnail sketch of what they should know in the areas of accounting, finance, and marketing. Basic accounting principles and financial statement reporting will be explained in clear concise terms. Some simple low cost marketing techniques will be covered as well as several local financial resources available to current business owners. Though this lecture is geared to those who already own a
small business, it is open to anyone interested.
It is free, and no prior registration is necessary. January 16, 2002 History Lecture at George's Creek Library

Contact: Debbie Hartman George's Creek Library 76 Main Street Lonaconing, MD 21539 “The Story of George’s Creek: A Program on the History of Lonaconing, Barton, and Midland” will be presented at the George’s Creek Branch Library Tuesday, January 22, at 6:30 p.m. by local historians Sandra Grandstaff and Mary Meyers. Grandstaff and Meyers have been working to preserve George’s Creek’s history into a collection that is accessible to the public. This collection can be found in the meeting room of the library in Lonaconing. Grandstaff will show items from the collection and explain their historical significance. Meyers will then talk on the history of Lonaconing’s Iron Furnace. This lecture is part of the Allegany County Library System’s History Lecture Series. Also scheduled is Harold Scott, author of The Civil War Hospitals At Cumberland & Clarysville, Maryland and other local history books, speaking about the Civil War in this area on Tuesday February 5, at 7:00 p.m. at the Allegany County Library on Washington Street in Cumberland. Van NewKirk will be at the Allegany County Library on Washington Street on
January 29 from 6:30 till 7:30 p.m. to speak on the 19th
Century Victorian novel. The
Victorian period was from 1837 till 1901 when Queen Victoria was on the
throne--it was during this period that the Main Library, in 1850, and many of
the other buildings on Washington Street were built. “The
novels that appealed to the people during the Victorian period and were their
bestsellers are considered classics today,” explained Van NewKirk.
“Having graduated with a degree in English, I’ve read a lot of these
novels; they have become my favorites, so I enjoy sharing my impressions of them
with other people.”

Evans started telling stories in the Chicago area 25 years ago. She uses her African, Celtic, and Native American heritage to build bridges between cultures and to embellish her work with singing, poetry, and dance. She now heralds from the headwaters of the Potomac River in West Virginia. This program is being funded by the Western Maryland Public Libraries in celebration of Black History Month.

Cumberland, MD 21502 The Ebenezer Full Gospel Baptist Church Choir will kick off the Allegany County Library System’s month-long celebration of Black History Month with a concert of spirituals on Tuesday, February 5, from 7 till 8 pm at the South Cumberland Branch Library. An African (American) History Contest for youth ages 9-17 is being sponsored in cooperation with Community Unity In Action, Inc. The contest started January 18th and ends at 4 pm on February 15, 2002. Hurry to your local branch library or check out our web site, http://lib.allconet.org, for details. Other scheduled events include a series of storytellers who will be performing at public libraries around the county. Ilene Evans will be at Story Hour at our LaVale Branch on Wednesday, February 6, 10 am for a program titled “Voices From the Earth” for children ages 3 to 6. Candice Faison will portray Harriet Tubman on Thursday February 7, at 6:30 at the LaVale Branch Library in a program for children K thru 6 grade. African American Storyteller Jean Walton will be presenting four programs during the month. February 9, 10 am at the Main Library on Washington Street in a program for children ages K through 6 grade. February 12, at 1:00 am, Walton will be at the Frostburg Branch Library at Story Hour, a program for children ages 3 to 6. On Saturday February 16 Walton will visit the Westernport Branch at 2 pm with a program for children ages K- 6 grade; and on February 20 she’ll be at an Adult Story Time at the South Cumberland Branch starting at 6:30 pm. Menelika McCarthy will present a program celebrating Black History Month at Westernport Branch’s Story Hour on Monday February 18, at 6:30 pm; and Robin Wynder will finish out the celebration at Frostburg’s Magical Monday program for children on February 25 at 6:30 pm at the Frostburg Branch Library.

Faison Portraying Harriet Tubman at LaVale Library for Black History Month
PRESS RELEASE - Allegany County Library System Contact: Marie Shipley LaVale Library 815 National Highway LaVale, MD 21502 Candice Faison, a 9th grade student at Allegany High School will be portraying Harriet Tubman at the LaVale Branch Library’s Evening Story Hour on Thursday, February 7, at 6:30 pm. The program is designed to entertain children and adults. “Faison started performing the program as a high school class assignment last year for Black History Month,” explained her mother. “The program starts with Faison dressed as Harriet singing and proceeds with her doing a reading about the life of Harriet Tubman.” Various events are planned for the Allegany County Library on Washington Street and its branches to Celebrate Black History Month. The library is also co-sponsoring with Community Unity In Action, Inc. an African (American) History Contest for youth ages 9-17 years old.
