Library History Lecture Part of  Women Sustaining the American Spirit Campaign

PRESS RELEASE - Allegany County Library System

                   Cumberland, MD 21502

Betty VanNewkirk, Jacquelyn Sams, and Alma Logsdon will be guest speakers for the Allegany County Library’s History Lecture “Women Sustaining the American Spirit in Allegany County” on Tuesday, March 5 at 7 PM at the Frostburg Branch Library.

“March is National Women’s History Month, and the 2002 theme is ‘Women Sustaining the American Spirit,”’ commented Linda Burkey, program coordinator.  “Our program will give men and women and older boys and girls the opportunity to be part of this National Women’s History Month campaign.  We will be showcasing many stories of local women whose lives exemplify the American Spirit.”

Betty VanNewkirk, from the Frostburg Museum will talk about numerous women, many from Frostburg, who demonstrate that women have been, as VanNewkirk says “education able from the very beginning.”

Jacquelyn Sams, former women’s counselor and investigator for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, helped to establish the first shelter for battered women in Springfield, MA in 1978.  In 1985 a chance encounter introduced her to Elizabeth Cady Stanton.  Sams says she “could talk for days about” Cady, but will give the audience just an introduction.  As Sams points out about Cady, “it is interesting that many of the reforms that she advocated:  equal wages, divorce reform, co-education, girls’ athletics and full equality in every area of life continue to be issues which we grapple with today.”

Alma Logsdon, an educator in Allegany County for many years, will share the adventurous story of her first year teaching in the small West Virginia town of Magnolia.  “This town wasn’t even a scheduled stop for the train.  I had to light a fire to a rolled up piece of newspaper to stop the train to go home,” Logsdon comments.

Another program focusing on women with a discussion of the book Having Our Say:  The Dalany Sisters’ First 100 Years by Sarah and A. Elizabeth Delany will be held at the Westernport Branch Library on Wednesday, March 20 at 7:00 PM.
