May 15, 2002 Kid's Book Discussion at Library on June 10PRESS RELEASE - Allegany County Library System
Contact: Linda Burkey South Cumberland Library 100 Seymour Street Cumberland, MD 21502
All children between the ages of 8 and 15 are invited to join in on the book
discussions that take place on the 2nd Monday of every month at the
South Cumberland Branch of the Allegany County Library System.
Discussions start at 11 AM; light refreshments are served.
The book selection for June is My
Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George. “The book discussion group was formed two months ago by local homeschooling families,” commented Linda Burkey, library coordinator for the group. “We’ve been getting good turnouts for discussions, and would like to offer this type of opportunity to all children in the area.” “The
group wanted to tell everyone that they should definitely read Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls, the book we discussed in May.
They felt the need to warn readers about the last 2 chapters though; they
will really get to you. They also
recommended Island of the Blue Dolphin by
Scott O’Dell as a good summer read.” “Belonging to a book discussion group adds another dimension to the reading experience,” added Burkey. Meeting with friends and exchanging feelings about what you’ve read, it’s an excellent way to learn to express yourself. Everyone, because of their different backgrounds, experience the book a little differently.” Originally
the book selection for June was Otto of
the Silver Hands by Howard Pyle, but the group changed selections so more
kids would have access to the title picked.

The South Cumberland Branch of
the Allegany County Library System will offer a computer class titled “ What
Is A Computer?” on Wednesday, May 22 from 12 noon till 1 PM.
“In this class we offer a look inside a computer that has been
dismantled. You will be able to see
the basic components inside a computer,” commented Linda Burkey, Librarian.
“Sometimes being able to see what’s inside a computer helps the
person understand quicker how a computer works.
The terminology has more meaning to them, and many gain a better idea of
what they might want to purchase. The
difference between hardware and software, bits and bytes, and other basic
terminology will also be explained.”
