All children between the ages of 8 and 15 are invited to join in on the book discussions that take place on the 2nd Monday of every month at the South Cumberland Branch of the Allegany County Library System.  Discussions start at 11 AM; light refreshments are served.  The book selection for June is My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George.

“The book discussion group was formed two months ago by local homeschooling families,” commented Linda Burkey, library coordinator for the group.  “We’ve been getting good turnouts for discussions, and would like to offer this type of opportunity to all children in the area.”

“The group wanted to tell everyone that they should definitely read Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls, the book we discussed in May.  They felt the need to warn readers about the last 2 chapters though; they will really get to you.  They also recommended Island of the Blue Dolphin by Scott O’Dell as a good summer read.”

“Belonging to a book discussion group adds another dimension to the reading experience,” added Burkey.  Meeting with friends and exchanging feelings about what you’ve read, it’s an excellent way to learn to express yourself.  Everyone, because of their different backgrounds, experience the book a little differently.”

Originally the book selection for June was Otto of the Silver Hands by Howard Pyle, but the group changed selections so more kids would have access to the title picked.

The South Cumberland Branch offers a computer class every other month.  July’s class will be on Using Microsoft Word.  The date for that class will be announced later.

Make a Pit Stop at Your Library for a Summer of Fun

Don’t miss out on these 7 weeks of fast paced challenge with a racing theme that’s sure to please.  Have your friends join you, and make some new friends there.  To tune you up and build your power, we have 24 simple and fun but challenging tasks.  Your progress will be posted on your own individual board.  Collect your rewards each week as you race to the checkered flag finish.  A party awaits you there.

All the tasks involve some sort of reading, anything from experiencing literature to reading recipes.  Some include performing a task, building, and drawing.    None are difficult, just fun, usually involving completing the task with a friend.  Most of all, RACE TO READ stresses sharing reading with friends.  Work together, and do some “drafting” for a faster finish.

Some individuals who work with races locally will be stopping by to say hello.  Some will have vehicles with them for you to see.  The Rock Speedway has generously given us free passes to use as door prizes.
