Local author Bradford Barkley will be at Allegany County Library System’s LaVale Branch on Tuesday, July 30 at 7 pm for a Meet the Author Program.  The program is designed for readers and writers alike.  Barkley will be reading some of his own writing and give some tips on writing good dialogue.

Barkley, who teaches writing, has two new books being published by St. Martin’s Press.  His new novel, Alison’s Automotive Repair Manual will be out in March; and a collection of short stories, Properties of Stainless Steel, will also be out next year.

Barkley’s first novel Money, Love:  A Novel, published by Barnes & Noble, was a “Discover Great New Writers” selection and named as a Washington Post “Best Book of 2000.”  Kirkus Reviews said it was “Terrifically entertaining…A thoroughly captivating debut.  First novels don’t get much better than this.”

Maureen Picard Robins, New York Times Book Reviewer, called Barkley’s Circle View “very much a man’s book.”  She goes on to say that his “stories showcase the substantial skill of a young writer.”

“This is a good chance for an aspiring writer to learn the trade from a published author,” commented Sondra Ritchie, LaVale’s Branch Manager.  Teenagers are encouraged to come take advantage of this opportunity.

Frostburg Library Helps Inform the Public About Colorectal Cancer

The Frostburg Branch of the Allegany County Library System will offer the public the opportunity to learn more about Colorectal Cancer on Wednesday, August 7 starting at 5 PM.  Come see an informative display, and take advantage of this opportunity to have your questions answered one-on-one by a staff member from the Colorectal Cancer Control Program.

This is one health subject the public may put off learning about even though Colorectal Cancer is a leading cause of cancer deaths in Maryland.  The Colorectal Cancer Control Program encourages screening and other simple tests available to detect the cancer in its early stages.

The Colorectal Cancer Control Program is a partnership between the Allegany County Health Department and the Western Maryland Health System Wellness Center made available with funds from the Maryland Tobacco Settlement.
