Many opportunities to learn about local archeological events are also found on the site. This program is part of the Allegany County Library System’s History Lecture Series, which offers local residents programs on a variety of local history subjects. A program is offered the first Tuesday of each month at one of the library system’s branches. The talks usually last about a half hour or so with a question and answer period following. Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Gates Computer Training LabPRESS RELEASE - Allegany County Library System Contact: Linda Burkey South Cumberland Library 100 Seymour Street Cumberland, MD 21502
Thanks to a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation, the Allegany County Library System is now able to provide computer
training and expanded access to computing technology and the Internet at the
Gates Computer Training Lab located at the Frostburg branch library. During the ribbon cutting, Library Director John Taube
remarked “Practically speaking, as a nation we have embraced the Internet age.
We turn to online resources to find homework help, or keep up with
current events and research health information.
Maryland now allows you to renew your vehicle registration online as well
as complete your income taxes. With
this migration to online services, access to the Internet is increasingly
important.“ Taube continued “but for the 46% of American who do not
have access to a computer at home or work, libraries are the ideal place to
offer public access to computers and technology.
Our doors are open to everyone, we are open in the evenings and on
weekends, we are open year round, and we are already staffed by people whose job
it is to manage and information, whether in book or on the Internet.“ The 10 Gates Computer Training Lab computers machines are
high-end machines loaded with hardware and software that make them useful as
research and learning tools for every type of user, from novice to expert and
from toddler to older adults. The
instructor’s station is also connected to a projection screen for in-class
presentations. The library is currently offering computers classes on
topics such as Introduction to the Internet, how to use our online catalog STAKs,
setting up an email accounts, and how to write a resume using Word. To ensure access to the
latest technology, the computers are available for public use.
We also make the lab available for other nonprofit, and educational
groups to use the lab. Taube closed his remarks by saying “The Allegany County Library System is a great value for our citizens and we offer cost-effective services for all.”

PRESS RELEASE - Allegany County Library System Contact: Linda Burkey South Cumberland Library 100 Seymour Street Cumberland, MD 21502
The Allegany County Library System will use National Library Week, April 6-12, to join libraries from around the country to show off what they have to offer to their public. Our celebration is three fold: First we would like to entice those who never set foot inside a library to stop by and see what they’re missing. Your libraries today are not the libraries of your grandparents’ generation. We offer DVDs, music CDs, Videos, Inter-library loan, Internet access, FAX service, automated checkout, programs for adults and families as well as for children, and our new ASK US NOW program for online reference help and much more. Everything is still free! Second we will celebrate with rewards and activities. A FOOD FOR FINES day will be held on Thursday, the 10th. For each non-perishable food item you bring in, we will take $1 off your library fines. There will be a $10 limit. Food items will go to the Western Maryland Food Bank. The Main Library on Washington Street will have a huge USED BOOK SALE from Monday, April 7 through Saturday, April 12. There will be fiction and non-fiction titles for adults and children. For more information please call 301-777-1200. The Volunteer Center of Allegany County will have a BUY THE BOOK book drive to ensure our children have access to plenty of books and as a local response to 9/11. Buy a new book for a child, age birth to 12, and place it in one of the Little Red Wagons the center has place in all our library branches. The goal for this year is to collect 700 new books to place in our libraries. The drive will end 11 AM on April 26 with a closing ceremony featuring Radio Disney at the LaVale Library. The Volunteers Unity in the Spirit of America, Clear Channel Cares, Century 21, R Realtor Multiple Listing Service, and Dennis Murray Realtor makes this drive possible. A GATES COMPUTER TRAINING LAB OPEN HOUSE on Monday, April 7 will offer the public a chance to see and try out the new lab. The Main Library and Westernport Branch will host the library system’s 3RD ANNUAL POETRY CONTEST. Submit your original poems on or before April 29, 2003. Drop them off or mail them to any branch of the Allegany County Library System, or they can be e-mailed to lburkey@allconet.org On each entry, please include your name, phone number or e-mail address, and your age so we can determine which division you qualify to enter. Entries can be typed or written, but writing must be legible. Two winners will be chosen from each division to receive $25. Book-Store Gift Certificates. Divisions: Children up to and including 12 years, Teens ages 13-17, and Adults from 18 to 118. Third, we would like to promote the career of librarians to those of you looking for an exciting and rewarding career to enter. We are here to answer any questions you may have about this career or to give a behind the scenes look at what goes on at a library. For more career information you can also visit www.beomealibrarian.com. We hope to see everyone at the library! |
