A Food For Fine Day will be held on Thursday, April 10 at all branches of the Allegany County Library System as part of their celebration of National Library Week.  On this day, for each non-perishable food item turned in, the patron will receive credit for one dollar off their library fine.

Last year the library system collected 596 pounds of non-perishable food items for the Western Maryland Food Bank.  “It’s a win-win situation.  Patrons get to clear their library fines, and the library gets to help the Western Maryland Food Bank,” commented Linda Burkey, Coordinator of Community Outreach.

The Allegany County Library System’s Homeschoolers’ Book Discussion Group will meet on Monday, April 14 at 2PM to discuss Jean Craighead George’s Frightful’s Mountain.

Very different from the first two books in the trilogy, My Side of the Mountain and The Other Side of The Mountain, Frightful’s Mountain is written from kind of a bird’s eye view.  It explains what it’s like to be a peregrine falcon and no longer a pet, but newly released into the wild.  The bird, Frightful was a helpful hunter and companion for Sam Gridley, the main character of the books.  When Sam learned it was illegal to own an endangered bird of prey he had to return the falcon to the wild.

Jean Craighead George grew up with naturalists all around her.  On her website she mentions how her dad was an entomologist and ecologist.  “My brothers were two of the first falconers in the United States and gave me a falcon to train when I was thirteen.”              George integrates so much nature and ecology into her books; plus her stories are captivating.  Reading them is a great way to get a child or a family interested in nature reading just in time to celebrate Earth Day on April 22.

The library has on hold copies of the books for those who would like to join in on the discussions.  Any librarian can help you obtain a copy of the book.  The group will be reading Julie by George on May 12.  This is the sequel to the Julie’s Wolf Pack that the group discussed in March,

The Homeschoolers’ Book Discussion Group meets the 2nd Monday of each month at the South Cumberland Library.  Discussions last about one hour and are open to all children ages 7 to 15.

The Allegany County Library System’s History Lecture hosts Francis Zumbrun speaking on the Cresaps:  Allegany County’s Frontier Family on Tuesday, May 6, at 7 PM at the Frostburg Community Library.

Zumbrun, Forest Ranger and Manager of Green Ridge State Forest, has been researching this family for many years.  Understanding the early history of this area is almost synonymous with understanding the history of this family, starting with Thomas Cresap at his trading post in Oldtown.

The program is part of the Allegany County Library System’s History Lecture Series, which offers local residents programs on a variety of local history subjects.  A program is offered the first Tuesday of each month at one of the library system’s branches.  The talks usually last about a half hour or so with a question and answer period following.

South Cumberland Branch Library’s Book Discussion Group has picked White Teeth:  A Novel by Zadie Smith to discuss at their discussion on June 26 starting at 7 PM at the Library.

The group will be reading Small Wonder a book of essays by Barbara Kingsolver to discuss on Thursday, May 22.  Calling both Arizona and Southern Appalachia home, Kingsolver witnesses vastly different worlds of nature and social structure that she draws on for her writing.  In 2000 she was awarded the National Humanities Medal, the United States’ highest award for service to the arts.

“Our group had never discussed a set of essays, but enjoyed Kingsolver’s writing so much that we felt we couldn’t go wrong with a book of hers,” commented Linda Burkey, Coordinator for the group.  “Her essays were beautiful.  We enjoyed them so much for a March discussion, it was a unanimous vote that we discuss Small Wonder for May.”

The Book Discussion Group meets the 4th  Thursday of each month at the Library.  Each discussion lasts usually an hour or maybe a little longer.  Participants bring with them suggestion for future discussions.  The selection is a group choice.  New members are welcome; there is no need to register.  Anyone interested can come sit in on one of our discussions.
