The Homeschoolers’ Book Discussion Group of the Allegany County Library System will meet Monday, May 12 to discuss the book Julie by Jean Craighead George.

The group has already discussed Julie of the Wolves, George’s Newbery Medal winner earlier in the year; we’re hopeful we’re going to find out what actually happens to Julie, as the first book has a very surprising ending, and you real can’t tell if Julie prefers living with the wolves, wants to live in a rather remote Alaskan village or ends up flying to California to meet her pen pal, like she intended to do.

The Book Discussion Group, open to all children ages 7 to 15, has been meeting the 2nd  Monday of each month at the South Cumberland Library, but plans for our discussions over the summer months will be decided at the May 12 meeting.

The library system will be introducing a new type of book discussion group for teens over the summer, TEEN ONLINE BOOK SHARE Image.  Watch for details about this group forthcoming later this month.

The South Cumberland Branch of the Allegany County Library System will host Bill Armstrong and Dr. Bob Poling, co-authors of the new book Wings Over Cumberland:  An Aviation History on Tuesday, May 20 at 7 PM.

Bill Armstrong gives us a little preview of Wings Over Cumberland, explaining “it is an attempt to capture the flavor of aviation in this region over the last 80 years.”  It includes stories about colorful personalities such as Torque Landis, an early barnstormer and Bernard Miltenberger with his flying-farmer comic act.

“Mexico Farms is the 2nd oldest airfield in the state.  1st. is College Park, which is also the oldest in the county,” Armstrong mentioned. “These airfields were started by the Army Air Service, which had a route between Washington D.C. and Dayton, Ohio in the early 20’s.”

When Poling and Armstrong co-chaired a committee to determine the contents to be placed in the visitor’s gallery at the new terminal at the Cumberland Airport, Armstrong quickly became interested in Poling’s background.  From an early age Poling had walked to the Mexico Farms airfield and collected memorabilia; he also collected newspaper clippings about local aviation.  Armstrong, who had recently written Into the Wild Blue Yonder Gently wanted to see Poling’s collection preserved in a book.  The two spent about 3 years compiling the book.

Poling is probably best known as a local retired dentist.  He served in the Army Air Corps/Force and was a pilot in WWII.  Armstrong retired as a Lt. Col. in 1975 from the Air Force.  He was a jet fighter pilot.  He is also known for his work as our local Airport Manager.

Liz McDowell from the Elk Ridge Nature Works, LLC will be at the Westernport Library Tuesday, June 10 at 7:30 PM for a lecture “Creating a Backyard Habitat Using Native Wildflowers”.

Propagating native wildflowers from seeds collected locally in Garrett County is just one of the nature experiences offered by McDowell, along with Ron Boyer, at the Elk Ridge Nature Works, LLC.  They also run a demonstration nursery and offer habitat boxes for nursing/roosting animals including bats and bees.

Boneset, Square-stemmed Monkey flower, Great Blue Lobelia, Bee Balm, and Green-headed Coneflower are just a few of the native wildflowers that can be grown for the home garden.  Many of the wildflowers encourage butterfly visits.  Come learn about this exciting way to garden in your own backyard
