Frostburg Library Book Club Selects July Read

PRESS RELEASE - Allegany County Library System

                   Frostburg, MD 21532

The Frostburg Book Club have chosen Alice Sebold’s Lovely Bones to discuss at their meeting on Thursday, July 17, starting at 2 PM.    The book is a rather unique read in that a girl who has been murder tells the story.   This makes it difficult to predict exactly where the story might go or how it might end.  The book has been on both the New York Times’ and Washington Post’s Best Sellers List for over 40 weeks.

The group will discuss Tea Rose by Jennifer Donnelly for their June 19 meeting.

New members are welcome to join in on any of the discussions that take place the third Thursday of each month at 2PM.  Information on this group is available at the Circulation Desk or by calling 301-687-0790.  Copies of the books being discussed are available at your local library.

“Blast Off To Reading, Start an Adventure That Lasts a Lifetime!” The Allegany County Library System’s Summer Reading Club will be kicking off the week of June 23 with activities at every branch. The club has been redesigned for 2003, making it easier for more children throughout the county to join. This year children can stop by any library branch, including the Bookmobile, at any time during our regular library hours to participate in the club.

Special Kick-off events include visits from Patricia Mack-Preston, the African American Storyteller on Wednesday, June 25. She will be at the Main Branch at 31 Washington in Cumberland at 2 PM and at the George’s Creek Branch starting at 6:30 PM. Magician and Balloon Bender, Louis Paul will be at the South Cumberland Branch on Tuesday, June 24 at 2 PM to work some of his magic with the kids. The LaVale Branch will hold their first club meeting on Thursday, June 26 at 2 PM and Frostburg and Westernport Branches will both begin theirs on Wednesday, June 25 at 2PM. Check with your local library for a listing of all the planned activities.

All children ages 6 to 12 are invited to participate in this club, that runs for six weeks. Prizes will be given each week as children complete the reading tasks assigned, which can be anything from reading with a friend, drawing a picture about a book or asking a librarian for help. “This year we’ve made it so that if you want to participate but can’t make any of the special events, you can still stop by a library and pick up a game board,” explained Linda Burkey, Coordinator of Community Outreach. “Just complete the fun activities listed for each consecutive week, then stop back by your library to collect your prize for the week.” Make summer reading a priority this year, and come join “Sneaks” in another exciting adventure. Game boards this year have been dedicated to the memory of those who lost their lives on the Space Shuttle Columbia.

The South Cumberland Library will be offering a “By the Book Experience with Pen and Ink Drawing” on Monday, July 7 from11 to 12 noon.  This will be a simple lesson straight from the book Creating Textures in Pen & Ink with Watercolor by Claudia NiceThe experience is designed for teens and adults, budding artists who would like to try their hand with this medium.

“I had a lady say to me one day ‘Oh I didn’t know you could learn something like that from a book’,” explained Linda Burkey, library staff member who will be demonstrating the lesson.  “We have a good collection of arts and craft books at our library; so many of them are designed for the patron to learn the art or craft right from the book, no teacher really necessary.  It’s nice be able to try out the medium before you go invest in the supplies needed.”

The lesson will be free; supplies will be provided.  Pre-registration is required.  Call 301-724-1607 to register.
