Library Homeschoolers' Book Discussion Group Will Meet October 27PRESS RELEASE - Allegany County Library System Contact: Linda Burkey South Cumberland Library 100 Seymour Street Cumberland, MD 21502
The Homeschoolers’ Book Discussion Group of the Allegany County Library System has chosen 2003 Newbery Medal Winner Crispin: The Cross of Lead by Avi for it’s discussion on Monday, October 27 from 2 to 3 PM at the South Cumberland Library.
The book, set in medieval England, is the story of Asta’s son, a 13 year old orphan, accused of a crime he didn’t commit. The book quickly transports you into the exciting, scary life of the 1300s, working on a manor. Except on this manor the lord is absent; and the evil steward, John Aycliffe, is taking advantage of the situation.
“This will be the first discussion for the current school year, so we will be polling to ascertain the best day and time to meet; if you are unable to make the Oct. 27 discussion, we still welcome your input,” explained Linda Burkey, group coordinator.
For the last few years the group has been comprised mainly of children in 4th through 8th grade, but any homeschoolers in the area are invited to come join the group. Amazon.com has the reading level for Crispin as 9-12 year olds. The South Cumberland Library will also be holding a Kid’s Book Discussion for younger children on Monday, November 3 at 2:30 PM. The Allegany County public schools are closed this day. We’ll be discussing Patricia Reilly Giff’s The Candy Corn Contest, (3rd Grade Level), about Ms. Rooney’s Thanksgiving contest going astray.
