Stanley K. Dickinson, Ph.D., author of A Celebration of Iron:  A History 1609-1892 From Occoquan, VA to Friendsville, MD will be at the Main Branch of the Allegany County Library System on Monday, December 8 at 7PM for a history talk and book signing.

Dickinson explains the book is the “result of a research investigation … conducted over a period of nearly three years.  During that time the author hiked and bicycled over most of the 184 miles of the C&O Canal as well as excursions along several tributaries of the Potomac: Shenandoah, Monocracy, Antietam Creek, George’s Creek, Elk Run, Green Spring Run, Licking Creek, Wills Creek as well as several of their tributaries”.  Specimens collected during his research have been on display at the George’s Creek Regional Library in Lonaconing.

Since retiring, Dickinson says he has “gravitated back to what attracted him to science as a pre-teenager—rocks”.  He now volunteers with the National Park Service, the Forest Service, the U.S. Geological Survey, and the State of Maryland Department of Natural Resources, producing guidebooks, visitor materials, exhibits, and leading field trips.

Dickinson, having received his MS from West Virginia University and his PhD from Harvard, performed research in advanced electronic materials and managed basic research programs in seismology during his 40 years with the Air Force.

“Most local residents realize the first iron rail for the railroads was made here,” comments Linda Burkey, with the library system.  “Hardly anyone has heard the rest of the story of the iron industry story in our region.  This is a very readable book, talking about furnace sites as close as Columbia Avenue.  The book is loaded with pictures and might make a wonderful Christmas gift for history buffs.”

This Holiday Season, make a donation to the Allegany County Library System for the purchase of books, and the library will affix a bookplate inside with the name of a person you would like to honor.  The honoree will receive notification that a gift has been made in their name.

What better way to show how much you care than through a book to the library for all who pull it off the shelf to see?  People will thank you for sharing your gift each time they find a book with your name in it, that’s a book that may not have been there without your support.

South Cumberland Library’s Book Discussion Group will meet on Thursday, December 18 to discuss Girl With a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier.

Chevalier explains in an interview about the book on Amazon.com that a poster of the famous painting “Girl With a Pearl Earring” by Dutch painter, Johannes Vermeer hung above her bed since she was 19. The author brings 17th century Holland alive in her book by inventing a life for the girl in the painting.  Though 16 year old Griet’s life as a household employee for Vermeer is an invention of the author, the portrayal of the girl’s world gives the reader a real look into life as it was in the 1660’s in the city of Delft.

The Book Discussion Group normally meets the 4th Thursday of each month; but due to Christmas, the date has been changed this month.  Everyone is invited to join the discussions; copies of the book are available at your local library.

The Older Kids’ Book Group have picked Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer to discuss on  Tuesday, January 13 from 3:30 to 4:30. All kids 10 thru 17 are invited to read the book and attend the discussion.

This is the first book by Irish author Eoin Colfer to reach the US in a big way. The Irish are known for their storytelling abilities, especially when leprechauns and fairies and such are involved. Colfer carries on this tradition with what has quickly become a very popular series for teens. Artemis, the 12 year old main character and villain in the book, masterminds a plot to restore his family’s lost fortune. It’s humorous fast-paced action, bringing Artemis up against the LEPrecon fairy police and an advanced technological society of elves.

This book group meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Copies of the book are available at your local library.
