The Baltimore Zoo’s ZOOmobile will be returning Wednesday, May 19 to branches of the Allegany County Library System for another round of free educational outreach programs.

Zoo staff will be at the LaVale Branch Library at 10AM with “The Big Book Of Animal Tails”. This program lets 3-6 year olds find out what’s so great about having a tail. Singing and storytelling bring bright, colorful illustrations to life. Then the children will have a chance to meet some very special tailed animals up close after the 30 minute show.

The ZOOmobile will proceed to the South Cumberland Branch at 1:30PM for “Going, Going, Gone” a program on endangered animals. Some exotic animal ambassadors will be visiting to illustrate their stories. A special invitation has been extended to developmentally disabled teens and adults in the community for this program, but it is also a wonderful opportunity for seniors in the area, who would like to feel like a kid visiting the zoo. If you will be bringing a group, please call Linda at 301-724-1607 to make arrangements.

The Endangered Species program will be repeated again at 3:30PM at the South Cumberland Branch for older children and adults. Come learn why habitats are vanishing. Also learn some big and small changes you can make to help safeguard our planet’s animals that are in danger of extinction.

At 4:30PM the George’s Creek Branch will be hosting the ZOOmobile for the Endangered Species program. Again everyone is invited! The program is geared to older kids and adults. A new group of animals have been included this year; so, if you attended last year’s performance, you will be meeting different animals.

“For patrons of the library’s Main Branch which is closing for renovation, these programs will make an excellent chance for you to get acquainted with one of our other branches nearby”, commented Linda Burkey, Coordinator of Community Outreach for the system. “Our LaVale Branch is located at 815 National Highway, just about in the middle of LaVale, about 2 miles past “The Narrows” at the corner of Grant and National Hwy. Or, if you are coming from the West, it’s below the State Police Barracks, about a mile closer to Cumberland.”

“The South Cumberland Library’s parking lot is at the corner of 1st Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. Pennsylvania Avenue runs all the way between Oldtown Road and the Industrial Boulevard. The library is at the end of the parking lot.”

“Thanks to funding from Columbia Gas of Maryland, the library system is able to have the zoo return,” continued Burkey. “They were here last Fall and again this past April. Audiences seem to leave the programs just thrilled to have such an up-close experience with the animals.”
