Sue Willison from the WMHS Wellness Center will present an informational
program, “Heart Disease and Its Risk Factors” at the Frostburg Branch of
the Allegany County Library System on Thursday, February 10 at 6 PM.
The program is free and open to the public, but registration is
required. Please call the library at 301-687-0790 to register.
“Many times our patrons are not as busy during the winter months; so we
try and host some educational programs at that time to encourage people
to take care of their health,” explained Linda Burkey, Coordinator of
Community Outreach. “This gives them plenty of time to establish some
better health habits before spring and summer roll around. Just maybe
these habits will allow them to be in better shape for getting out and
being active.”

The South Cumberland Library will hold a program “Writing Your Love”
along with Evening Story Time on Thursday, February 10 starting at 6:30
PM. Come learn to write a special message for your special valentine,
using your own truly unique and endearing words.
Along with the program following Evening Story Time, Shane Crawford, who
has just finished writing a new poetry book, Poetry From The Mind,
will be present to read some of his poems and to answer questions
about writing. Crawford has dedicated his book to his friend, the late
J.T. Stepanek. The two attended MD Camp together, and Crawford made a
promise to Stepanek to keep his thoughts, memories, and goals alive in
the minds of all us who share this earth.

The Frostburg Book Club will meet at the
Frostburg Community Library on Thursday, February 17 at 2 PM to discuss
The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown.
A murder at the Louvre Museum starts the
action in this international page turner. Secrets dormant for thousands
of years get exposed, including the existence of a secret society that
has existed since the time of Christ. Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon
is called in to examine the clues hidden in great works of art,
including one of the famous painter Da Vinci.
“The Da Vinci Code has continued to be
one of the most talked about books we’ve seen in years,” commented a
library staff member. “We now have a number of non-fiction books written
on ‘Cracking the Code’. Dan Brown is an expert at blending history into
his fiction, blurring the line between the two.”
Come experience the fun of broadening
your horizons, making friends, enjoying a social time, and taking your
reading to a whole new level as only participating in a book group can
do.
The club meets the third Thursday of the
month at the Frostburg Community Library at 2 PM. New members are
welcome to join in on any of the discussions.

South Cumberland Library’s Book Discussion Group has picked Snow
Falling on Cedars by David Guterson for their February 24
discussion starting at 7PM in the library meeting room.
Winner of both the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award and the
PEN/Faulkner Award, the book quickly became a bestseller in the 90’s.
From the first page, you are immersed in the world of San Piedro
Islanders and the aftermath of World War II, with its internment of the
Japanese Americans fresh on peoples hearts. People’s lives have been
torn apart, but it is the arrest of Japanese American Kabuo Miyomoto for
the murder of a fellow fisherman that exposes the deeper effects of
wartime.
The Book Discussion Group meets the 4th Thursday of each
month at 7PM to discuss a book chosen by the group, which includes about
an equal amount of men and women. All older teens and adults are invited
to take part in one or all of the discussions. Copies of the book are
available at the library.

Local historian, Al Feldstein will be at the newly opened Main Branch of
the Allegany County Library System on Wednesday, February 16 at 7 PM,
for a talk on “The History of the Allegany Academy and Library”.
Everyone is invited to come to the talk and to take a few minutes,
before or after, to see the newly renovated building.
“Not many people realize what a rich, extended history our newly
renovated library building has had since 1849, when it was built, but
not as a library,” commented a staff member. “We are enthused that the
renovation made it possible for us to have a meeting room in the
building, making more adult programming, such as History Lectures,
possible. With the inclusion of an elevator to the second floor, the
“Meeting Room” is also now handicapped accessible.”

Local parents whose children attended last week’s Evening Story Time at
the Main Branch of the Allegany County Library System received special
“I love Mom” and “I love Dad” photo Valentines thanks to local
photographer David Romero.
The program was the first of a series of local artists being invited to
the library to talk to kids about art and how to make a living as an
artist. Romero is a professional photographer and the owner of Vibrant
Image, a digital photography studio.
Children’s Librarian Juanita Salazar made buttons from the photos for
the children to give to their parents to wear on Valentine’s Day.
The Evening Story Time program takes place every Thursday at the Main
Branch starting at 6:30 pm. These programs are designed for the
convenience of families who are busy in the daytime hours, but still
want to foster good reading habits for their families.
Why not make it a “One Stop Accomplishes
A Lot”! Kids can enjoy programs while parents and caregivers pick out
some movies, DVDs or videos, for the weekend. Movies check out for three
days. The Main Branch is open on Sunday for you to call or visit. Movies
can also be renewed on-line at
www.alleganycountylibrary.info. Also don’t forget to stock up on
reading materials: books or magazines.
