South Cumberland Library’s Book Discussion Group will meet Thursday, March 24 to discuss two books written by David Guterson:  East of the Mountains and Snow Falling on Cedars.  The discussion will begin at 7PM.

Guterson’s stories capture lives that don’t go as planned. He places his characters in Washington state, in places unfamiliar to most of us; but after a few hours of reading, you’ll feel as if you have actually lived in these wonderful places.

The Book Group, which is comprised of about equal number of men and women, meets the 4th Thursday of each month at 7 PM.  Everyone is invited to take part in one or all of the discussions. Copies of the books are available at the library.

The Frostburg Book Club will meet at the Frostburg Community Library on Thursday, March 17 at 2 PM to discuss Life of Pi by Spanish-born, Canadian author Yann Martell.

Life of Pi is the story, actually stories, of how Pi Patel and Richard Parker survive 227 days lost at sea on a lifeboat. Pi is a sixteen year-old boy who has just lost his family when their Japanese cargo ship sank. Richard Parker is a 450-lb Bengal tiger.

Come experience the fun of broadening your horizons, making friends, enjoying a social time, and taking your reading to a whole new level as only participating in a book group can do.

The club meets the third Thursday of the month at the Frostburg Community Library at 2 PM.  New members are welcome to join in on any of the discussions.

The Allegany County Library System’s History Lecture Series continues Tuesday, March 29 with Francis Zumbrun speaking on the upcoming “Centennial of the Birth of the Conservation Movement in Maryland”. The talk will be held at the Washington Street Branch starting at 7 PM. The public is invited. The talk will take place in the library’s newly renovated meeting room that is handicapped accessible.

“Zumbrun is quick to point out, this movement started in Western Maryland, an area he knows well as Forest Manager at Green Ridge State Forest,” commented Linda Burkey, lecture coordinator. “The talk will focus on Allegany County, once known as the ‘Western Frontier’ where George Washington, Daniel Boone, and other well known individuals traveled.”

“Zumbrun has been such a popular speaker in the library’s lecture series over the years, with his accumulated knowledge of local history. He also knows these forests as home to the man he has been researching for years, Thomas Cresap (the first settler in Allegany County.)

The South Cumberland Branch of the Allegany County Library System is thrilled to host Gwendolyn Briley-Strand on Friday, April 8 at 7 PM for a costumed, living history presentation portraying the life of Harriet Tubman. After introducing the life of Harriet Tubman, Briley-Strand discusses her research into the period in which this remarkable woman lived.

This performance was rescheduled to April 8 after being cancelled in January due to snow. Originally tickets were required for the program, but since being moved to another larger room, tickets are no longer required. Everyone is invited.

Harriet Tubman, who was born a slave in Dorchester County, Maryland, and became a leader in the Underground Railroad, was known as the “Moses of Her People”. She led over three hundred slaves to freedom during the Civil War, and served as both a spy and a scout for the Union, as well as nursing fugitive slaves.

Briley-Strand has been touring her one-woman longer version of her show portraying Harriet Tubman since 1993. She has performed at the White House 4th of July Celebrations, the Smithsonian, the Kennedy Center, museums, and cultural organizations. She received her Bachelor of Arts in theatre from Fordham University in New York, and is a member of the Actor’s Equity Association, Screen Actors Guild, and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.

The program is being sponsored by the Maryland Humanities Council, an organization that offers programs in history, literature, ethics, philosophy, religion, and artistic culture. Their mission is as their introductions say “ask the big questions, help us to understand human values and experience, provide a historical and cultural context for our modern existence, and enable us to lead more thoughtful and deliberate lives.”

This program is one of many made possible by the Council with generous support from Columbia Gas of Maryland, a NiSource Company.

Sign language interpretation is available if requested by March 28.
