Aaron Whiteman, a patron of the George’s Creek Regional Library, was
this year’s top reader of the Allegany County Library System’s, Summer
Reading Club. He was honored at a Baltimore Orioles game on August 24,
2005, along with the other top readers from across the state of MD.
Before the start of the game Aaron and his fellow readers met on the
field with second baseman Brian Roberts. After introducing each of the
children he gave them a t-shirt, hat, Orioles Magazine, and an
autographed poster. The winners were also given free tickets for their
family members to attend the game.
Even though his team lost the game, Aaron said that “it was an amazing
experience, we had really good seats, and it was a lot of fun”. He
really enjoyed having a fly ball hit right to where he was sitting. If
the man behind him hadn’t jumped up and leaned over him, the ball would
have been Aaron’s. His favorite part of the ballgame was getting to see
a grand slam. Aaron is looking forward to taking part in next year’s
summer reading program.

The “One Book, One Allegany County” 2005 Campaign is going strong but
will be ending soon. However, it’s not too late to take part in the
reading incentive this year. We are asking everyone in Allegany County
to read Oh, the Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss, sometime
during the month of September!
“We’ve been amazed to discover how many families actually own a copy of
this book,” comments Linda Burkey, coordinator this year. “It’s
a good, short, edgy book of encouragement; but look at the
illustrations, realize that Seuss did this book just a year before he
died at the age of 87. It becomes a WOW experience for the reader!”
Becky Grimm, children’s librarian at the South
Cumberland Library, added that “The book could be read by everyone in
the family, parents could read to their toddlers, school-age children
could read the book, as well as adults.”
“One Book, One Allegany County” 2005 brochures with
“Questions to Discuss after Reading The Book” are available at any “One
Book” sponsor: Allegany Arts Council, Allegany County Board of
Education, Allegany County Library System, the Book Center in
Cumberland, and Main Street Books in Frostburg.
Middle & High School students are invited to participate
this year by entering the following contest─“Going Places: Allegany
County”. Read Oh, the Places You’ll Go.
Tell us someplace cool in Allegany County that you wish
you could go. Maybe you’ll win a chance to do just that!
Drop your entries at any library branch or at the Allegany Arts Council;
or mail them to South Cumberland Library ATT: “GOING PLACES”, 100
Seymour Street, Cumberland, MD 21502. You can also e-mail them in to
lburkey@allconet.org
Entries need to be dropped off
or mailed by the last day of September.
The public is encouraged to
record their experiences reading the book as a family, along with
friends, or on their own. The One Book Committee welcomes your comments,
which can be turned in to any sponsor or mailed to the South Cumberland

South Cumberland Library’s Book Group has picked Cold Sassy Tree: a
Novel by Georgia born author Olive Ann Burns to discuss at their
October 27th meeting, starting at 7 PM at the library.
This look into the life of a Southern family at the turn of the last
century is through the eyes of fourteen year old Willy Tweedy. The
marriage of his grandfather Rucker, to a much younger women just three
weeks after his grandmother’s death, leaves Willy in a stew and the rest
of the town less than understanding.
According to the book’s dust jacket, the novel had its roots in stories
told to the author by her parents and relatives. Burns had been working
as a journalist; and during a battle with cancer, while undergoing
chemotherapy, she decided to write a fiction. The result was this modern
classic from 1984.
Take your reading experience to a whole new level by joining a book
discussion group. Attend one or all of the group’s discussions. The
group consists of about an equal number of women and men. Members of
the group select which books the group will discuss, and copies of the
books are available at the library.
