South Cumberland Library’s Book Group has picked Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer for their December 15th discussion, starting at 7 PM at the library.

This first novel by Foer was recently released as a movie by Warner Independent Pictures. This rather unusual book gives the story of a young man’s journey to the Ukraine; he’s looking to find the woman who saved his grandfather from death during the Holocaust. If you’ve read the book or seen the movie, come join in on the discussion.  Copies of the book are available at the library.

Take your reading experience to a whole new level by joining a book discussion group. Attend one or all of the group’s discussions. The group consists of about an equal number of women and men.  Members of the group select which books the group will discuss, and copies of the books are available at the library. Note December’s discussion is one week earlier due to Christmas; the group normally meets the 4th Thursday of each month.

Children attending Evening Story Time at the Washington Street Library on Thursday night, December 22, will be celebrating the holidays with a Christmas Party, including karaoke, bubbles, cake, music, stories, and a special performance by Kidz Kollege. The 6:30-7PM program is open to all ages.

“Thursday is the last day of school before Christmas for the public schools,” commented Children’s Librarian Juanita Salazar; “so, it seemed a good evening to start their holiday celebration.”

Evening Story Time is held at the Washington Street Library every Thursday night at 6:30 PM.  These half-hour programs, for all aged children, are designed for the convenience of families busy in the daytime, but who still want to foster good reading habits for their families.

Library's Kool Reader's Club will meet January 12th

The South Cumberland Library’s “Kool Reader’s Club” will meet Thursday, January 12, at 7:00 PM to discuss Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. This Newbery Honor Book was recently released as a movie. It is the story of how 10-year-old India Opal Buloni learns a lot about her inability to make friends when she rescues a stray dog at the local Winn-Dixie super-market.

Due to interest expressed by children in the 3rd and 4th grade, the club has picked a book written on a 3rd-4th grade reading level to allow more children to participate. Parts of the book have a lot of dialog that is easy enough for children in first and second grade to read, but parents or older siblings may help them read the rest of the book. It’s a perfect book to read aloud as a family, a few chapters at a time. Copies of the book are available at the library.

Children will also have a chance at the January 12 meeting to learn a little about George Washington Carver, who died Jan. 5, 1943. Without him, people may never have discovered that you can eat peanuts.
