Library Book Group Picks Plainsong to Discuss January 26

The South Cumberland Library’s Book Discussion Group will meet January 26 at 7PM to discuss Kent Haruf’s Plainsong.

 

This National Book Award Finalist is the story of a community of loving and caring people on the plains just east of Denver. Haruf’s characters demonstrate in a fascinating way that members of a family don’t have to be related by blood.

 

Take your reading experience to a whole new level by joining a book discussion group. Attend one or all of our group’s discussions. The library’s group consists of a balanced number of women and men.  Members of the group select which books the group will discuss. Copies of the books are available at the library. The group meets the 4th Thursday of each month.

"Toddler Times" and "Story Times" at All Library Branches

All branches of the Allegany County Library System have resumed their “Toddler Times” and “Story Times” following their break for the holidays.

 

Toddler Times are offered at each library for children 18 months to 36 months accompanied by a parent or caregiver. Activities at these programs are designed to stimulate and entertain the younger child. Toddler Time Schedule: Frostburg Branch-every other week, Wednesday at 11 AM and Thursday at 6:30 PM, starting Jan. 18; George’s Creek Branch-6:30 PM on 1st and 3rd Thursdays; LaVale Branch-11:30 AM, Wednesdays Jan. 11 & 25, Feb. 8 & 22, Mar. 8 & 22, Apr. 5 & 19, and May 3 & 17; South Cumberland Branch-10:00 AM, Wednesdays Jan. 11 & 25, Feb. 8 & 22, Mar. 8 & 22, Apr. 5 & 19, and May 3 & 17; Washington Street Branch-every Thursday at 11:30 AM; and Westernport Branch-every Thursday at 11:00 AM.

 

Story Hours encourage children aged 3-6 to socialize for an hour of stories, films, and activities designed just for them. Story Hour Schedule: Frostburg Branch-Tuesday at 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM; George’s Creek Branch-Tuesday at 10:30 AM and Wednesday at 2:30 PM; LaVale Branch-Wednesday at 10:00 AM; South Cumberland Branch-Tuesday at 10:00 AM; Washington Street Branch-Thursday at 10:00 AM; and Westernport Branch-Monday at 6:30 PM.

 

Evening Story Times are also held at each branch for children of all ages. These half-hour programs are designed for the convenience of families who are busy in the daytime hours but still want to foster good reading habits for their families. Evening Story Time Schedule: Frostburg Branch-6:30 PM on Mondays Jan. 23, Feb. 20, Mar. 20, Apr. 17, and May 15; George’s Creek Branch-every Wednesday at 6:30 PM; LaVale Branch-6:30 PM on Thursdays Jan. 5, Feb. 2, Mar. 2, Apr. 6, and May 4; South Cumberland Branch-6:30 PM Thursdays Jan. 12, Feb. 9, Mar. 9, Apr. 13, and May 11; Washington Street Branch-Thursday at 6:30 PM; and Westernport Branch-Tuesday at 6:30 PM.

 

Saturday Story Times will also be held at the Washington Street Branch at 11:00 AM on Saturdays Jan. 14 and 28, Feb. 11 and 25, March 11 and 25, April 8 and 22, and May 6 and 20.

Westernport Library's Story Hour Will Hold "Pajama Party"

Children of all ages are invited to the Westernport Library’s Story Hour on Monday, January 23 at 6:30PM for a “Pajama Party” with Miss Juanita.

 

Miss Juanita, is well known locally, for her aliases that include “Sheila, sister of the Crocodile Hunter from down under” during Summer Reading Club, and more recently as Mrs. Claus.

Library Hosting Stewart for Card Making Workshop

Linda Stewart will be at the South Cumberland Library on Saturday, February 4 at 3:00 PM for a Valentine card “Make It & Take It”. Open to ages 13 and up, the participants will learn some very special techniques to enhance their card making skills. Space at the workshop is limit; call 301-724-1607 to reserve your space.

 

“Stewart’s fabulous paper creations combining quilling, origami, 3-D parts and other techniques were recently on display in the lobby of the library,” commented staff member Becky Grimm. “It’s just unbelievable what she can do with paper. Come expand your own card making skills to use on your Valentine’s Day creations.”

 

Library's Kool Reader's Club" Discussing Mississippi Bridge

The South Cumberland Library’s “Kool Reader’s Club” will meet Thursday, February 9, at 7:00 PM to discuss Mississippi Bridge by Mildred D. Taylor. The February discussion is being dedicated to the memory of Rosa Parks, a real hero for kids today.

 

Children are encouraged to read this book aloud at home, so their whole family gains a greater understanding of the conditions that brought about Park’s heroic action. Copies of the book are available at the library.

 

Children will also have a chance at the February 9 meeting to learn a little about a mischievous, inquisitive boy, Thomas Edison, who was born Feb. 11, 1847. His inventions number over 1,000!

Library's "Living History Presentation" -- Amy Monaco as First Lady Sarah Childress Polk on February 7

The Washington Street Library will host a “Living History Performance” with Amy Monaco as First Lady Sarah Childress Polk on Tuesday, February 7, starting at 7:00 PM. Space is limited, and reservations are required for this free program. Call 301-777-1200.

 

James Polk is one of our lesser known U.S. Presidents, serving from 1845-1849 when the Mexican-US border wasn’t even settled. Polk wanted Texas and California as part of our country. Through his astute supervision, both of these territory disputes were settled, the Mexican War fought and concluded.

 

Come see Polk through the eyes of his wife and learn more about this woman who had her own opinions on how the White House should be run.

Library Book Group Picks Barkley's Book to Discuss February 23

The South Cumberland Library’s Book Discussion Group has picked Alison’s Automotive Repair Manual: A Novel by Brad Barkley to discuss at their February 23rd meeting. The discussion, open to all older teens and adults, will start at 7PM.

 

The book is Alison’s story. A widow in her mid- thirties, she’s been living with her sister and brother-in-law since her husband’s death, and she’s in no particular hurry to move. Only when she decides to start rebuilding a dilapidated ’76 Corvette, found in her sister’s garage, does her life take some interesting and funny turns.

 

Barkley, who teaches creative writing at Frostburg State University, has set his novel in a small West Virginia town, Wiley Ford. Library Journal calls the book, published by St. Martin’s Press, “a winner.” Copies of the book are available at the library
