The newly formed LaVale Library Book Discussion invites the public to their discussion of Life of Pi by Spanish born Canadian author Yann Martel, on Wednesday, February 22, 7:00 PM at the library, 815 National Highway.

Imagination and truth abound in this story of Piscine Molitor “Pi” Patel, a teenager from India. Pi is in the process of moving to Canada with his family, but disaster strikes. He now finds himself orphaned and alone, well nearly alone, except for some zoo animals including Richard Parker, a 450-pound Bengal tiger, which have joined him in the lifeboat.

“The book discussion group began in January 2006 with the LaVale Library Staff wanting to discuss the book The Kite Runner,” Branch Manager Pam Neder tells us. “The staff is very pleased to see the patron interest in this library sponsored event. We hope to see it continue monthly.” Copies of the book are available at the library; for more information on this new group, please call 301-729-0855.

The Westernport Library will host West Virginia quilter and quilt collector Suzanne Cawley for the trunk show “Collecting Antique Quilts.” The program will be on Wednesday, March 15 at 7PM at the library.  The program is free and open to all the public.

Cawley will explain and show how to identify the different styles of antique quilts from 1830 thru 1930. Information will also be available on how to care for your old family quilts.

“The library system is happy to be able to offer this quality of program to the general public for free,” commented Linda Burkey for the library system. “We can only imagine the number of antique quilts that must exist in this county. These can be priceless items to the families of those who made them, and for others that own them.”
