Residents will have the opportunity to travel back in time when local
historian Sandy Grandstaff offers a “Trip thru George’s Creek Regional
Library’s History Room” on Wednesday, March 15 at 7:00 PM
The early 1800’s saw a boom town in Lonaconing, with the coal mining,
silk mill, the glass company, and iron furnace active. Also learn about
the intriguing concept of “company towns”.
The statement, “If you build it, they will come!” was never truer than
in this case. The donation of Lefty Grove’s Major League Baseball Most
Valuable Players trophy was the beginning of the creation of a very
special room within the library. People came with their most
irreplaceable and priceless possessions. They came with photos, vintage
clothing, antique musical instruments and everything else necessary to
tell the history of their company towns and of the strong ancestors who
raised families there.
“When the George's Creek Regional Library opened its doors on March 26,
2001, its architectural features, including a reproduction of the Iron
Furnace, used in the mid-1800's by the George's Creek Coal and Iron
Company, foretold its future,” commented a library staff member. “This
collection truly demonstrates what one area can do when its people are
dedicated to preserving their historical and genealogical resources for
future generations.”

The South Cumberland Library’s “Kool Reader’s Club” will meet Thursday,
April 13, at 7:00 PM to discuss The Tale of Despereaux, Kate
DiCamillo’s Newbery Medal Award Winner illustrated by Timothy Basil
Ering.
Despereaux the mouse, one of the four heroes from the book has been
called “one of the most endearing of his ilk ever to appear in
children’s books” by Miriam Lang Budin, in her School Library Journal
review. Other characters include the humans Princess Pea and Miggery Sow
and a rat called Roscuro. The story will quickly have you in the midst
of a castle; of course it has a dungeon, which you will get to see.
You’ll feel the hate and hurt, love and
forgiveness entwined in the words.
DiCamillo is perhaps best known for her book
Because of Winn-Dixie, a Newbery Honor Book which was recently
release as a movie. Illustrator Timothy Basil Ering has done a variety
of artwork, theater sets, murals, and fine art. You may realize why his
illustrations for The Tale of Despereaux are so beautiful when
you read his following quote from the book jacket: “My mother may have
been a mouse in her past life, as I watched her save and help so many
mice in our house”.
The Kool Reader’s Club is held the second Thursday of each month at 7PM,
following Evening Story Time. Meetings consist of a half hour of
discussion and activities to encourage reading among 3rd, 4th,
and 5th graders.
Participants will also have the opportunity to enjoy the comic words and
pictures by Mo Willems in his books The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog!,
Knuffle Bunny, and Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!
