The Allegany County Library System and the Frostburg Center for Creative
Writing have teamed up to celebrate National Poetry Month. “National
Poetry Month is an annual commemoration each April,” says Gerry LaFemina,
director of the Center for Creative Writing. “It was established in
1996 and is geared toward showcasing poetry to the public in immediate
and innovative ways.”
To celebrate, the Washington Street and Westernport Libraries are
displaying contemporary American poems. Each poem is showcased in a
Frostburg student designed and illustrated print done by Kristin
Weinbrenner and alumni David Garren. The poems chosen this year are
“Buying Wine” by Sebastian Matthews, “Drummer” by Richard Frost,
“Against Blue” by Adrienne Lewis and “One Hand Waving” by Nicole
Cooley.

The Westernport Library will be celebrating Monday, May 1, as Mother
Goose Day! If you come to the library that day and recite a nursery
rhyme from memory, you’ll receive a free lollipop!
According to the Mother Goose Society, the name for this bearer of our
childhood favorite stories can be traced all the way back to 1650. Many
authors over the years have used the name Mother Goose. Just recently
the library system purchased the newly released You Read to Me, I’ll
Read to You: Very Short Mother Goose Tales to Read Together.
"This is a great day for everyone to celebrate,” suggested a
library staff member. “There are so many more of these nursery rhymes in
existence than what most of us can remember. It’s important we pass
these wonderful little, infant-sized portions of literature on to future
generations.”

were very pleased with the enthusiasm of the group.”
All adults in the area are

Greg MaBee, Investment Representative
for Edward Jones, will be at the Frostburg Community Library on
Thursday, May 4 at 7PM for a seminar on “Investing Basics”.
“The Allegany County Library System has
been hosting various, short, usually one-hour seminars on basic
investing to help the public take that first step toward their financial
security,” explained Linda Burkey, Coordinator of Community Outreach for
the library system. “As tax deadlines come to a close, it is an
excellent time to start making the decisions that can put you ahead for
next year.
“Even if you’re feeling like you have no
money at all to invest, come! It is amazing how these investment
representatives can help you view your situation from a different
perspective. For more information on the program, call 301-687-0790.”
“Local libraries, especially our
Washington Street Library, offer a tremendous number of free, financial
resources for the public to use. We provide resources for all levels of
personal finances; maybe you’re one who has procrastinated, haven’t
saved or invested at all, or maybe you’re quite a sophisticated
investor. Many of the resources are expensive, prohibitively so for the
public to subscribe to themselves,” Burkey added.
