The South Cumberland Library’s Book Discussion Group has picked This
Is Not Civilization: A Novel by Robert Rosenberg to discuss at their
May 25 meeting starting at 7 PM at the library.
Rosenberg has been lauded for this book, his debut to writing
contemporary fiction. He may have learned how to write in Iowa, but it
is clear that his traveling and teaching around the world, both for the
Peace Corps and on his own, has given him plenty of experiences to
actually understand the meaning of the word “Civilization” on a very
personal level.
Take your reading experience to a whole new level by joining a book
discussion group. Attend one or all of our group’s discussions. The
library’s group consists of a balanced number of women and men. Members
of the group select which books the group will discuss. The group meets
the 4th Thursday of each month.

The Allegany County Library System has announced the winners of its 6th
Annual Poetry Contest held during the month of April.
Division I, for children up to and including 8 year olds, was won by
Makea Luzader for her poem “Skating Fun”. Division II, for tweens ages
9-12, was won by Allison Jade for the poem “Rainstorm Rock Band”.
Division III, for teens ages 13-17, was won by Judy May Broadwater for
“The Days”. And, Division IV for adults was won by Cindy Harris for
“Mom’s Poem”.
“This was a tough year for judging, picking just one winner when each of
the judges had different favorites,” commented Linda Burkey, coordinator
for the contest. “We had a nice, diverse selection of poems submitted
for each division. Every poem showed the heartfelt emotion of the
writer. They’re very personal!”
“We congratulate each of the winners,
and thank all those who submitted poems. Each winner will receive a
book-store gift certificate. A display of the winning poems will be
traveling to library branches throughout the county and may be printed
in an upcoming Alle Update newsletter.”

The South Cumberland Library’s “Kool Reader’s Club” will meet Thursday,
June 8, at 7:00 PM to discuss the classic adventure My Side of the
Mountain by Jean Craighead George.
“Who doesn’t dream of getting out into the woods for some camping now
that it’s summer,” asks the club’s coordinator. “Join Sam Gribley, the
book’s main character, on his unforgettable wilderness survival
adventure in the Catskill Mountains. He sets out alone, but soon makes
friends with a falcon he names Frightful, a raccoon named Professor
Bando, and the Baron Weasel.”
The Kool Reader’s Club is held the second Thursday of each month at 7PM,
following Evening Story Time. Meetings consist of a half hour of
discussion and reading activities for 3rd, 4th and
5th graders.
Other books picked for reading over the summer include Megan McDonald’s
Judy Moody Declares Independence, which should leave you
with all kinds of liberating ideas for the summer, for
July 13 and the hilarious Guy Wire by Sarah Weeks for August 10.

What better place to discuss Carolyn Reeder’s book Captain Kate
than along the C&O Canal, the setting for the book. The LaVale Library
Staff will host just such an open-air book discussion for children and
their families on Thursday June 22.
“We ask that everyone meet at the Canal Boat area at 5:00 PM. Bring your
bike, water and a snack,” explained Children’s Librarian Marie Shipley.
“We will ride the tow path along the canal, stop and discuss Captain
Kate, and return to the Canal Boat area.”
We ask that you please pre-register for this event. Call the LaVale
Library for information at 301-729-0855. Copies of the book are
available at your local library.
Captain Kate is the perfect book for introducing children to what
life was like for local families traveling on a canal boat from
Cumberland to Georgetown, outside of Washington, D.C. Of course Reeder,
a Civil War buff, enmeshes the reader in very personal encounters with
the war taking place all around them. The book is also an account of how
12-year-old Kate learns to accept the death of her dad, and the change
that she has to deal with when her mother remarries a soldier with two
children.
