Local para-normal investigator, Kathy Kinsman, will be at the Washington
Street Library on Monday, August 21 at 7PM to tell her own personal
experiences with para-normal sensations she has had around the local
area and in neighboring states.
Kinsman is a long-time investigator in this area, working with the
Allegany Ghost & Apparition Investigation Network.
“One of our most requested speakers, Kinsman will captivate you with her
stories,” commented a library staff member. “When she first talked to me
about her experiences, I was somewhat floored; they sounded scary. Then
as she went on to explain more, she made me realize such experiences can
also be comforting. This program will give you a chance to learn more
about the subject.”

Children and teenagers in Allegany County and the surrounding area never
have to be stumped by a tough homework assignment again! From 2 PM till
midnight, 7 day a week, students from 4th grade to 12th
grade and college intro can simply visit the library or the library’s
web site at
www.alleganycountylibrary.info from their home PC to get immediate,
free help from qualified tutors. In the 2005/2006 school year, about one
million students from across the country completed Live Homework Help
sessions.
“Allow yourself the confidence that comes from feeling you totally
understand what was covered in class each day, and be poised and ready
to learn new material tomorrow,” suggests Linda, a long-time county
librarian . “What a self-esteem booster, to be in control.”
“We encourage you to do a little check each evening. If you find you
don’t completely understand your homework, in just a few minutes, you
can be connected with a tutor for a 20 minute session. It’s that simple.
This little change to your routine can pay off big for you.”
You can use these tutors every night if you need them. The service is
easy to use. Just click on the smiley-face icon on the library’s home
page and type in your library card number (without spaces); There are
Online Classrooms for one-to-one help in math (elementary,
algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus), science (elementary, earth
science, biology, chemistry, physics), social studies (American History,
World History, Political Science and more), and English (spelling,
grammar, essay writing, book reports).
If you used the online tutors in the past, you will notice some changes
have been made this summer. The Live Homework Help version 2 is now in
place, with exciting new features making this edition even easier to
use. A new Web-based platform eliminates the need for a download,
allowing remote users to connect more quickly. Student and tutor are now
able to browse the Internet together in real-time, sharing resources and
navigating the learning process more effectively. A new Bilingual Online
Classroom has also been added, completely in Spanish.
Students and tutors can review specific homework questions, as well as
subject-specific concepts using features such as controlled chat, an
interactive white board and a special math tool that can be used to type
equations.
All tutors are certified teachers, college professors, professional
tutors or graduate school students from across the country. Every tutor
has completed a third party background check and a comprehensive
training program.
95% of the students who used this service during the 2005/2006 school
year reported they are glad the public library offers this service and
would recommend it to their friends. And, over 90% feel the program is
helping them build confidence in their school work.
The Live Homework Help Tutor program is made possible to Allegany County
Library System patrons by Western Maryland Public Libraries.
