Members of the Mountain Amateur Radio Club presented copies of the ARRL
Ham Radio License Manual to the Allegany County Library System to assist
prospective hams in obtaining an entry level license. Shown with ACLS
Director John Taube (left), are MARC President Terry Bolinger (center),
and Vice-President William Tucker.
The manual, designed for self-study, presents information you will need
to pass the Technician exam and become an effective operator, including
a welcome to the world of amateur radio, radio and electronics
fundamentals, operating stations equipment and communicating with other
hams, licensing and operating regulations, safety, and questions and
answers. 35 of the questions are randomly selected for the exam.
Amateur radio can offer participants a unique mix of technology, public
service convenience and fun. Some hams enjoy communicating across the
country and around the globe, making new friends over the airwaves. Some
like to build and experiment with electronics, experiencing cutting edge
technologies, or using their radios and skills during emergencies or
disasters.
Today’s ham radio gear offers possibilities for getting started at any
level. Your first radio station might be at home, in the car, or small
enough to take with you on the go. No Morse code test is required for
the Technician license. Check out a manual from your local public
library to get started. For additional information or to schedule a free
exam, contact MARC at the e-mail address W3YMW@hamtalk.org, or visit
their website at www.hamtalk.org.

South Cumberland Library’s Kool Reader’s Club has picked The Missing
Mummy by Ron Roy, part of the A to Z Mysteries series, to discuss
at their January 11 meeting at 7PM at the library.
All children are invited to the Kool Reader’s discussions for young
readers of chapter books. This month’s book selection is an easier,
about a 3rd grade level, chapter book, but fun reading even
for older children.
“Part of the reason for selecting this book was to make families aware
of the Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs exhibit coming to
Philadephia’s Franklin Institute this February,” commented Linda Burkey,
coordinator for Kool Reader’s. “The library has numerous non-fiction
books specifically on Tutankhamun which the group will also have a
chance to see during the meeting.”

The Frostburg Book Club will meet at the Frostburg Community Library on
Thursday, January 18 at 2 PM to discuss Fair and Tender Ladies by Lee
Smith.
In this book, called by Library Journal “Smith’s best work yet”, Ivy
Rowe lets you experience her unforgettable life by reading her letters
sent to family and friends from her mountain home in Appalachia. The
letters span a lifetime, as a pre-World War I youth to her becoming a
wife and mother.
The club meets the third Thursday of the month at the Frostburg
Community Library at 2 PM. New members are welcome to join in on any of
the discussions.
