The Friends of the LaVale Library have invited Mr. Al Feldstein to
present his “Historic Cumberland: A Picture Postcard Extravaganze” at
their kick-off meeting on Thursday, January 18 at 7:00 PM. The program
is open to the public. Come enjoy this 40-minute slide presentation, a
colorful and informative glimpse of early 20th century Cumberland.
The program covers schools, hospitals, churches, factories, and downtown
business scenes, as well as parades, floods, railroad, architecture, the
National Road, Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, Fort Cumberland, and other
areas of historic interest.
“Feldstein, an award-winning amateur regional historian, has been a good
friend to our local libraries over the years; having him on hand at this
Friends kick-off event for the community is just natural,” explained a
library staff member. “We’re proud to make the public aware of his most
recent efforts, including a postcard history book published in June on
Garrett County, and a new Allegany County Postcard book released in
December. He will be signing copies of his books at the event.”
“The program will also allow everyone in the community to become
familiar with what a Friends group can do for the library,” explained
Pam Neder, Branch Manager at the LaVale Library. “We will have
information available for anyone interested in joining the Allegany
County Library System’s newest Friends group.”
“I am enthused about the prospect of working with the community to make
our library even better,” said Bob Swan, a volunteer at the LaVale
Library. Swan is also serving on the Steering Committee for this newly
formed group. For more information on the January 18th event
or on the Friends of the LaVale Library, please call 301-729-0855.
